Naxos is stepping into the spotlight for the upcoming season with two new international accolades. According to MSN.com, Naxos is now listed among Europe’s “hidden gem” destinations, offering unforgettable experiences for visitors from around the globe. This recognition highlights the island’s ability to provide authentic Greek charm without the chaos of over-touristed hotspots, making it an ideal choice for those seeking beauty and tranquility both before and after the summer rush.
The American website, boasting hundreds of millions of readers, notes that “if you’re looking for a genuine Greek island without the madness of over-the-top tourist destinations, Naxos is the perfect choice. Its stunning beaches and traditional villages are major attractions year-round.” Adding to its prestige, Naxos ranks fourth out of thirty regions on MSN.com and Starsinsider’s list, competing with destinations from Croatia, Italy, Belgium, Iceland, and more. This places Naxos firmly among Europe’s top hidden destinations, recognized for its unique appeal and sustainable tourism practices.
This year, tourism in Naxos saw a remarkable increase of 10.6% in ferry arrivals in September, alongside an impressive 32% rise in air arrivals compared to last year. Vangelis Katsaras, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for Naxos and the Small Cyclades, emphasized that the island’s rise as a quality destination in international markets outside the high season is no mere coincidence. He highlighted the effective use of organized exhibitions, social media growth, familiarization trips, and continuous publications and recognitions throughout the year as key factors driving this success.
Recently, the municipality participated in the WTM 2024 international tourism exhibition in London, where meetings were arranged with professionals, bloggers, travel influencers, and journalists who contribute to popular media outlets like Times, MSN, and the Daily Telegraph. Following the exhibition, in a special event organized by the EOT UK office, Naxos was awarded the title of Greece’s top sustainable destination based on a vote by 13,000 customers on two of the UK’s leading travel comparison and booking platforms. Additionally, in September, the municipality conducted familiarization trips for specialized travel agents and journalists in collaboration with the EOT UK office, further cementing Naxos’s position as a premier and sustainable tourist destination in the Cyclades.
With these achievements, Naxos is not only enhancing its reputation as a must-visit hidden gem in Europe but also setting a benchmark for sustainable tourism. The island’s commitment to protecting its natural beauty and cultural heritage while welcoming tourists in a responsible manner makes it a standout choice for travelers looking to explore Greece’s authentic and eco-friendly destinations.
