Merkur.de, a popular news website that receives tens of millions of visitors per month, highlights Andros as the new undiscovered paradise of the Mediterranean, especially loved by Germans. The feature references a recent accolade awarded to the second-largest island of the Cyclades on a major German travel blog, following promotional initiatives by the local municipality.
The article highlights the island’s mansions, impressive villages, captivating nature, turquoise waters, and extensive hiking network. According to Merkur.de, “the history and culture of Andros are heavily influenced by shipping. As the homeland of many captains and sailors, the island has a strong connection to the sea. This maritime tradition is also reflected in the local cuisine. Dishes with fresh fish combined with local specialties make the heart of any demanding foodie beat faster. In the island’s numerous taverns and restaurants, visitors can enjoy the authentic flavors of Greek cuisine to the fullest.”
The German media also emphasizes that “Andros attracts numerous visitors not only in the summer months. The island also records increasing numbers of tourists outside the high season, such as during Greek Easter or Carnival. Noteworthy is the rise in visitors during the low season, as evidenced by the increasing bookings.”
According to data from the Andros Port Authority, the destination recorded a new arrival record from May to August 2024, with 186,092 arrivals.
“In a season of ups and downs for many Cycladic islands and other Greek destinations, Andros not only maintained its share but managed to improve its performance, even outside the high season, setting new records. For both professionals and local authorities and the municipality, this is the best moral reward for the efforts being made,” said Nikos Moustakas, the Municipal Councilor for Tourism of Andros.
